01 · Narrative orientation
From the public courts of Compton to the greatest stages in tennis, Serena tells the story of a girl whose power, determination, family, and unmistakable presence transformed a sport. Twenty-three Grand Slam singles titles only begin to measure the legacy. This is the sound of Serena Williams becoming Serena.
Before the trophies, the fashion, the packed stadiums and the name known around the world, there was a family with an extraordinary belief in what might be possible.
Richard Williams and Oracene Price raised Venus and Serena with a vision that seemed almost impossible from the outside. On public courts in Compton, California, two sisters learned the game together and began a journey that would eventually carry them to tennis’s most celebrated stages.
Venus arrived first. Then came the younger sister.
Serena brought something the sport had never quite seen before: extraordinary athleticism, devastating power, competitive fire and an ability to survive matches that appeared lost. She became a champion, then a dominant champion, then something larger than tennis itself.
The victories accumulated across generations of opponents and every Grand Slam stage. Her career included 23 major singles championships, an Open Era record, alongside an extraordinary doubles legacy with Venus and Olympic gold.
But the larger story is what happened around those victories. A Black girl from Compton became one of the most recognizable athletes on Earth. She challenged assumptions about race, femininity, strength, fashion, motherhood and what a tennis champion was supposed to look like.
The little girl with a racket became an icon. And eventually, one name was enough. Serena.
Recognition becomes understanding.
Understanding becomes emotion.
02 · The anthem
The record begins intimately, carrying the feeling of a young girl, her sister and a family dream before the world knows their names.

Serena is designed as both biography and coronation.
The record begins intimately, carrying the feeling of a young girl, her sister and a family dream before the world knows their names. The arrangement then grows alongside Serena’s life: rhythm enters, the vocal gains authority, percussion becomes heavier and the production expands toward the scale of the stadiums she would eventually command.
The female lead is essential. The performance should possess vulnerability and soul in the beginning but ultimately rise into a towering R&B/gospel-pop vocal—powerful enough to embody the force of the woman at the center of the story.
And the central hook deliberately becomes simpler as everything around it becomes bigger: Serena. Not merely a name. A declaration.
By the finale, the song should feel less like someone singing about Serena Williams and more like an arena recognizing what it witnessed.

That’s what the Story World should preserve.
